ICICI Sapphiro RuPay Review: The Only Premium Card That Also Does UPI
24 May 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

The ICICI Sapphiro RuPay carries the same lounge, golf, and welcome-voucher package as ICICI's Sapphiro Mastercard, but because it's issued on the RuPay network, it can also be linked to any UPI app for everyday QR payments. That's a genuinely unusual combination in the Indian market — a premium travel card that also functions as your daily UPI card — though it comes with a thinner insurance package and narrower acceptance abroad than the Mastercard version.
Fees and eligibility at a glance
The joining fee is ₹6,500 and the annual fee is ₹3,500, a structure where the first-year cost is notably higher than what you pay to renew. The fee waiver kicks in above ₹6,00,000 of annual spend, a threshold that's demanding but not unreasonable for someone using this as a primary card — roughly ₹50,000 a month. Forex markup is on the higher side at 3.5%, which makes sense given RuPay's more limited international acceptance; this isn't a card you'd pick specifically for overseas spending.
Rewards and how they actually work
Sapphiro RuPay earns points at a modest 0.5% base rate, with the reward categories skewing toward utilities at an even lower 0.25% — this is not a card built around an aggressive earn rate. Redemption is free when cashed out as statement credit or through ICICI's own reward catalogue, with a ₹99 + GST fee applying only to select third-party gift and merchandise catalogue items. The real reward math on this card isn't in the points at all — it's in the welcome voucher pack, worth over ₹13,000 across partners like Tata CliQ, EaseMyTrip, Da Milano, Croma, and EazyDiner Prime, credited within 45 days of paying the joining fee.
Lounge access and travel perks
You get 2 complimentary international lounge visits a year via Priority Pass or DreamFolks, plus domestic lounge access on crossing ₹75,000 of spend in the preceding calendar quarter — a spend-gated structure rather than a flat allotment, so it requires active tracking each quarter. Beyond lounges, there's a ₹2,00,000 personal accident cover specific to the RuPay variant, complimentary golf rounds (up to 4 a month tied to ₹50,000 of spend), a BookMyShow buy-one-get-one offer twice monthly on ₹25,000 of quarterly spend, a 1% fuel surcharge waiver capped at ₹4,000 per transaction, and 24/7 concierge service for travel and dining bookings.
What's genuinely good about this card
The UPI compatibility is the headline feature and it's a legitimately rare one — no other Sapphiro variant lets you link the card to a UPI app for QR payments, which means you can run your everyday spending and your premium travel card through the same account instead of juggling two cards. The welcome voucher pack worth over ₹13,000 comfortably clears the ₹6,500 joining fee if you actually use even a couple of the partner brands, making year one a clear net positive on paper. The 24/7 concierge and golf privileges give it real premium-card texture despite the relatively modest annual fee, and the quarterly-spend-gated domestic lounge access, while less convenient than a flat allotment, still delivers meaningful value for anyone spending steadily rather than in occasional bursts.
Where it falls short
The domestic lounge benefit requires hitting ₹75,000 in spend every calendar quarter to unlock, which means it's not a guaranteed perk the way flat-allotment cards offer — miss a quarter and you lose that quarter's access entirely. The insurance package is noticeably thinner than the Mastercard Sapphiro, and RuPay's acceptance outside India remains more limited, so this isn't the card to carry as your primary international travel card despite the lounge perks. A 3.5% forex markup is high enough that any meaningful international spend should probably go on a different card entirely. And the base reward rate of 0.5%, with utilities capped even lower at 0.25%, means the points program itself adds little beyond the welcome pack — this card earns its value from benefits, not from ongoing reward accumulation.
Who this card actually makes sense for
This card fits someone who wants one card that handles both premium travel perks and daily UPI spending without carrying two separate cards, who can reliably clear ₹75,000 in quarterly spend to keep domestic lounge access active, and whose international travel is occasional enough that the higher forex markup and thinner insurance aren't dealbreakers.
