Axis Magnus gives you much more back on what you spend. Kotak White Reserve is cheaper to keep year after year and treats add-on cardholders better. Both cost ₹12,500 a year, both have a 2% forex markup and both offer unlimited lounge access. The difference is in how they reward you, and that decides which one suits you.

How the rewards actually work

Axis Magnus: a high flat rate

Axis Magnus earns 12 Edge Reward points per ₹200, which BestCard values at a 4.8% base rate when points go to airline and hotel partners at 20 paise each. Travel spends earn an effective 12%. The catch is redemption. That value only shows up if you transfer points to travel partners. Cash or statement-credit redemptions are worth much less. If you won't transfer, the headline rate is misleading.

Kotak White Reserve: milestone-driven

Kotak White Reserve has a 1% base rate in our data. Most of its value comes from the White Pass system, which pays out at spend tiers and can be worth up to ₹2,50,000 a year at the top. Kotak doesn't publish a simple per-rupee earn rate or the full tier table for this card, so you can't predict the payout precisely unless you know which tiers you'll hit. On the sibling Kotak White, White Pass is worth ₹1 per pass through the brand catalogue and ₹0.70 as cash. That gives you a feel for how the currency behaves.

Rewards maths: two spend levels

These examples use only the dataset rates. For White Reserve we count just the 1% base, because the milestone payouts aren't published tier by tier.

₹1 lakh a month (₹20,000 travel, ₹80,000 other)

  • Magnus: ₹80,000 × 4.8% = ₹3,840, plus ₹20,000 × 12% = ₹2,400. Total ₹6,240 a month, or ₹74,880 a year.
  • White Reserve: ₹1,00,000 × 1% = ₹1,000 a month, or ₹12,000 a year, plus whatever White Pass milestones ₹12 lakh of annual spend unlocks.
  • Fees: ₹12 lakh a year clears White Reserve's ₹10 lakh waiver, so the renewal fee is free. Magnus's ₹25 lakh waiver is out of reach, so you pay ₹12,500 + GST.

Magnus still comes out ahead by about ₹62,880 before fees. After Magnus's ₹14,750 fee (with GST), the gap is still about ₹48,000, so White Pass milestones would have to be worth at least that much at ₹12 lakh of spend just to draw level.

₹2 lakh a month (₹40,000 travel, ₹1,60,000 other)

  • Magnus: ₹1,60,000 × 4.8% = ₹7,680, plus ₹40,000 × 12% = ₹4,800. Total ₹12,480 a month, or ₹1,49,760 a year.
  • White Reserve: ₹2,000 a month base, or ₹24,000 a year, plus higher White Pass tiers on ₹24 lakh of annual spend.
  • Fees: White Reserve's fee is waived. Magnus at ₹24 lakh falls just short of ₹25 lakh, so either push an extra ₹1 lakh through it or pay the fee.

At this level the White Pass ceiling of ₹2.5 lakh starts to matter. If Kotak's top tiers pay out near that figure for spend in this range, White Reserve could catch up. Ask Kotak for the current White Pass tier table before you decide. Our milestone benefits explainer explains how to value these structures.

Lounge access and travel

Both cards offer unlimited lounge access, with one meaningful difference. White Reserve covers add-on cardholders at domestic and international lounges, across 1,000+ lounges. If you travel with a spouse or parent on an add-on card, that saves real money every trip.

Magnus gives the primary cardholder unlimited domestic and international access plus 4 Priority Pass guest visits a year. From 28 August 2026, Priority Pass works only at international lounges for Magnus; in India you show the Magnus card itself. Magnus adds air accident cover of up to ₹4 crore.

On forex, they're level at 2%. On a ₹2 lakh foreign trip, either card adds ₹4,000 in markup plus 18% GST on that markup.

Lifestyle extras

White Reserve includes Club Marriott membership (up to 25% off food and beverage at Marriott restaurants in India), 2 golf rounds every month and concierge. Fuel surcharge waiver runs up to ₹4,500 a year.

Magnus offers complimentary golf, a fuel waiver capped at ₹700 per statement cycle, and a ₹12,500 welcome voucher that effectively cancels out the first-year fee.

Fees and waivers

The waiver gap is the biggest practical difference. ₹10 lakh versus ₹25 lakh. Many people who qualify for these cards spend ₹10–15 lakh a year on cards. For them, White Reserve is free from year two, and Magnus costs ₹12,500 + GST (₹14,750 with GST) every year. Magnus's rewards easily cover that fee at ₹1 lakh a month, but it's still worth counting. Check which spends count towards the waiver, since banks exclude some categories.

Who should pick which

  • A good share of your spend is travel, where the 12% rate makes a big difference.
  • You fly alone or with one companion and 4 guest visits a year are enough.

Verdict

For most high spenders who are happy to transfer points, Axis Magnus is the stronger rewards card. The 4.8% base and 12% travel rate in our data are hard to beat at any fee. Kotak White Reserve is the better family and lifestyle card: lounge access for add-ons, an achievable waiver and a milestone system that can pay well at high spend if Kotak's tiers suit you.
