Metal Credit Cards: Are They Worth the Hefty Annual Fees?
22 April 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

Metal credit cards get pitched on how they feel — the weight, the satisfying thunk on a counter, the visual upgrade from plastic. None of that has anything to do with whether the card is worth its annual fee, which on most metal cards is substantially higher than the plastic version of a comparable tier. The metal is a manufacturing choice, not a benefits tier.
What the metal actually costs the issuer
Metal cards are genuinely more expensive to produce and mail than standard plastic, and issuers pass some of that through in the annual fee. But that manufacturing cost is a small fraction of what separates a mid-tier annual fee from a premium one — the bulk of the price difference on most metal cards is the benefits package bundled with it: airport lounge access, concierge services, higher reward multipliers, travel insurance. The metal itself is closer to a design flourish than the reason you're paying more.
When the fee is justified
If you were already going to buy a premium card for the lounge access, travel insurance, and reward rate, and it happens to come in metal, the fee is justified by the benefits — you'd be paying it for the plastic version too. The math works when you actually use enough of the bundled perks (lounge visits, insurance claims, milestone bonuses) to offset the fee, the same calculation you'd run for any premium card. Our guide on when you should pay an annual fee walks through that breakeven math.
When you're just paying for the flex
If the metal weight and look are the actual draw and you wouldn't otherwise choose that card's benefits tier, you're paying a premium for something with zero financial return. A lighter-fee plastic card with a rewards structure that matches your actual spending will out-earn a metal card you're not using to its full benefit, every time.
