PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK credit card

The PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK is the upper tier of SBI's co-brand with PhonePe. Its headline is up to 10% effective value back on essential PhonePe transactions, the bill payments and recharges that many households already run through the app every month. It adds 4 domestic lounge visits a year, a complimentary Priority Pass membership and a joining fee that comes back as a PhonePe voucher. If PhonePe is where your bills get paid, this card turns that habit into a meaningful return. If not, most of its value goes unused.

Fees and eligibility at a glance

The joining fee is ₹1,499, and it's refunded in full as a PhonePe e-gift voucher once you make your first transaction, so year one is effectively free. The ₹1,499 annual fee from the second year is waived on ₹3 lakh of annual spend, ₹25,000 a month and a fairly high bar at this price. Eligibility asks for a credit score of 750 or above (stricter than the PURPLE variant's 700), a minimum monthly income of ₹25,000, and an age between 21 and 70, with both salaried and self-employed applicants accepted. The forex markup is the standard 3.5%, and cash advances cost 2.5% or ₹300 at domestic ATMs (3% or ₹300 internationally).

One thing to know: the card comes on both RuPay and Visa, and only the RuPay version can be linked to UPI. If you want to pay at shop QR codes through PhonePe with this card, pick RuPay when you apply. The Visa version works like any other card but stays off UPI.

Rewards and how they actually work

The card has three earning tiers. Essential PhonePe transactions earn up to 10% back. A second tier earns 5%, more than double the 2% that PURPLE offers at the same level. Everything outside the bonus tiers earns 1%. Rewards arrive as points worth 25 paise each, so the 10% rate works out to 40 points for every ₹100.

Run ₹6,000 a month of bill payments and recharges through PhonePe, and you earn about ₹600 a month, or ₹7,200 a year. That covers the annual fee nearly five times over. We haven't seen monthly caps listed for these rates, so check the current terms before routing very large payments through the card. Redemptions cost ₹99 plus taxes per request, charged once per batch.

Lounge access, milestones and fuel

You get 4 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year, one per quarter, plus a complimentary Priority Pass membership for international lounge access. The number of free international visits isn't specified, so don't count on a fixed allowance. There's a ₹5,000 travel voucher once you cross ₹5 lakh of annual spend, which adds about 1% on top of your regular rewards if you get there. A 1% fuel surcharge waiver applies on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000 at the pump.

How it compares with PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE and SBI Cashback

The PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE is the entry variant. It costs ₹499, also refunded as a PhonePe voucher after the first transaction, with the annual fee waived on ₹1 lakh of spend. It earns 5% on PhonePe app transactions and online shopping, 2% on its second tier and 1% on everything else, and offers a ₹3,000 travel voucher at ₹3 lakh of annual spend. There's no lounge access, but it runs on RuPay, so it works with UPI. On ₹6,000 a month of PhonePe bills, PURPLE earns about ₹3,600 a year against SELECT BLACK's ₹7,200. That gap is well over the ₹1,000 difference in fees, so regular PhonePe users get their money's worth from the upgrade.

The SBI Cashback Card is the better choice if your spending is spread across many websites rather than concentrated in PhonePe. It pays 5% cashback on all online spends, capped at ₹2,000 a month, and 1% offline, for a ₹999 fee waived on ₹2 lakh. Cashback is credited automatically with no redemption fee, and nothing has to be routed through one app.

What's genuinely good about this card

Up to 10% back on bills you'd pay anyway is an excellent rate on spending that barely changes month to month. The joining fee refund makes the first year free. Lounge access and a Priority Pass membership are a real upgrade over the PURPLE card. The ₹5,000 milestone voucher is meaningful for higher spenders. And the 5% tier gives the card some value beyond PhonePe essentials.

Where it falls short

The best rates are concentrated in the PhonePe app, so the card loses most of its edge if you pay bills anywhere else. The ₹3 lakh waiver is high for a ₹1,499 card. The 3.5% forex markup sits awkwardly with the lounge and Priority Pass benefits. Pick the Visa variant by mistake and you lose UPI linking, which is the main reason to hold a card co-branded with a UPI app. And points add a redemption step and fee that straight cashback avoids.

Who this card actually makes sense for

SELECT BLACK suits someone who already pays most household bills and recharges through PhonePe, spends ₹5,000 or more a month that way, and flies domestically a few times a year. If your PhonePe usage is light, PURPLE gets you the same idea for a third of the price, and if you mostly shop online across many sites, the SBI Cashback Card is simpler.

Where to go from here
