Which Credit Cards Give Rewards on UPI?

Linking a RuPay credit card to UPI is only half the story. Plenty of people go through the setup, start scanning QR codes with their card, and assume the reward points are stacking up the same way they would on a regular swipe — then find out months later that UPI transactions were excluded the whole time, or earned at a fraction of the normal rate. The card network being UPI-compatible and the card actually rewarding UPI spends are two separate questions.

Why some cards exclude UPI spends from rewards

Banks price rewards programs around expected transaction value and merchant category mix. UPI QR payments skew toward small-ticket spends at kirana stores, vegetable vendors, and local shops — categories that were traditionally cash-only and carry thin or no merchant discount rate for the bank. Some issuers responded by simply excluding UPI transactions from their standard reward-earning rules, the same way many cards already exclude fuel, rent, or wallet loads. It's not a UPI-specific penalty so much as UPI falling into an existing "low-MDR category" carve-out.

Cards that do reward UPI spends

A growing number of RuPay cards have gone the other way and explicitly built UPI into their earning structure, since it's become a genuinely large share of daily transaction volume for their cardholders. SBI Card's RuPay lineup has products where UPI spends earn at or close to the standard reward rate rather than being excluded — check the specific card's terms, since this varies across SBI's own portfolio, and see our SBI credit cards guide for which variants to look at. Several cooperative and small finance bank RuPay cards have also leaned into UPI rewards specifically to win over UPI-heavy spenders who wouldn't otherwise carry a credit card at all.

Cards that quietly don't

This is the more common trap. A number of premium RuPay cards that were originally built around swipe-based spending simply never updated their earning terms to include UPI, so linking them to a UPI app works fine at the payment level but silently earns zero reward points, even though your statement looks identical to a normal transaction. The only way to know for sure is to check your card's terms and conditions document for a UPI-specific exclusion clause, or run a small test transaction and watch whether points actually post to your account a few days later.

How to check your own card

Don't rely on what the bank's marketing page says about the card generally — go to the specific reward terms PDF and search for "UPI." If it's not mentioned at all, treat that as a bad sign rather than a neutral one; unmentioned usually means excluded by default. If you're unsure how reward accrual works in general before digging into UPI specifics, our guide on how to redeem credit card reward points covers the basics of how points get earned and tracked.

Should UPI rewards change which card you pick

If a large share of your monthly spending is small-ticket UPI QR payments — daily groceries, local shops, autos — it's worth prioritizing a RuPay card that explicitly rewards UPI over one with a marginally higher headline rate that excludes it. Compare the actual math against our best cashback credit cards roundup, since a lower flat cashback rate that applies to UPI can outperform a higher rate that doesn't.
