HDFC Pixel Play and Axis ACE are both low-fee RuPay cashback cards, but they reward different habits. Pixel Play lets you choose your own 5% categories and pays a separate 3% on one shopping merchant. Axis ACE pays 5% on bills through Google Pay, 4% on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola, and 1.5% on everything else. If your spending fits Pixel Play's menu, it earns more. If you pay bills through Google Pay and want a few lounge visits, ACE has the edge.

This post uses the fee fields, so confirm the current fee on HDFC Bank's site before applying.

How the rewards actually work

HDFC Pixel Play

HDFC Pixel Play lets you pick any 2 categories from dining, travel, groceries, electronics and fashion to earn 5% cashback, and one e-commerce merchant (Amazon, Flipkart or PayZapp) to earn 3%. You change the picks through the HDFC app. Each 5% category is capped at ₹500 of cashback a month, which is reached at ₹10,000 of spend in that category. The 3% merchant cap is also ₹500. Everything else earns an uncapped 1%. Cashback arrives as statement credit with no redemption fee.

Axis ACE

Axis ACE pays 5% on utility bills, DTH and mobile recharges made through Google Pay, capped at ₹500 a month. It pays 4% on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola, and our data lists no cap on that rate. Everything else earns an uncapped 1.5%. Cashback is credited to your statement automatically. The 4% rate is narrow: only those named apps qualify, not dining or taxi spend in general.

Worked example 1: ₹25,000 a month

Split: ₹3,000 on bills, ₹5,000 on restaurants and food delivery, ₹5,000 on groceries, ₹4,000 on Amazon, ₹8,000 on everything else. Annual spend ₹3,00,000. For Pixel Play, assume the categories are set to dining and groceries, with Amazon as the 3% merchant. For ACE, assume the food spend goes through Swiggy or Zomato.

HDFC Pixel Play

  • Dining: 5% × ₹5,000 = ₹250
  • Groceries: 5% × ₹5,000 = ₹250
  • Amazon: 3% × ₹4,000 = ₹120
  • Bills and others: 1% × ₹11,000 = ₹110
  • Total: ₹730 a month, ₹8,760 a year

Axis ACE

  • Bills via Google Pay: 5% × ₹3,000 = ₹150
  • Swiggy and Zomato: 4% × ₹5,000 = ₹200
  • Groceries, Amazon and others: 1.5% × ₹17,000 = ₹255
  • Total: ₹605 a month, ₹7,260 a year

Both fees are waived at ₹3 lakh a year. Pixel Play leads by about ₹1,500 a year.

Worked example 2: ₹50,000 a month

Split: ₹5,000 on bills, ₹10,000 on dining, ₹10,000 on groceries, ₹10,000 on Amazon, ₹15,000 on everything else. Annual spend ₹6,00,000.

HDFC Pixel Play

  • Dining: 5% × ₹10,000 = ₹500 (cap reached)
  • Groceries: 5% × ₹10,000 = ₹500 (cap reached)
  • Amazon: 3% × ₹10,000 = ₹300
  • Bills and others: 1% × ₹20,000 = ₹200
  • Total: ₹1,500 a month, ₹18,000 a year

Axis ACE

  • Bills: 5% × ₹5,000 = ₹250 (under the ₹500 cap)
  • Dining via Swiggy or Zomato: 4% × ₹10,000 = ₹400
  • Groceries, Amazon and others: 1.5% × ₹35,000 = ₹525
  • Total: ₹1,175 a month, ₹14,100 a year

Pixel Play leads by ₹3,900 a year. If only half your dining runs through Swiggy or Zomato, ACE falls further behind. If you have much larger bill payments, ACE's 5% rate hits its ₹500 cap at ₹10,000 of Google Pay bills a month.

Lounge access and travel

This is a clear win for ACE. It lists 4 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year at select airports, unlocked by ₹50,000 of spend in the preceding three calendar months. Pixel Play has no lounge access, insurance or travel perks, and our data describes it as a pure cashback product. ACE's forex markup is 3.5%, and Pixel Play's is not listed in our data, so treat neither as a foreign-spend card. For more on RuPay cards and UPI, see our RuPay credit cards on UPI guide.

Fees and waivers

The two fees are almost identical, ₹500 against ₹499, and neither is a burden. The waiver bar is where they differ: ₹1,00,000 a year for Pixel Play, roughly ₹8,300 a month, against ₹2,00,000 for ACE, roughly ₹16,700 a month. Both clear easily in the examples above. Income bars are ₹25,000 a month for Pixel Play and ₹15,000 for ACE, so ACE is easier to qualify for.

Who should pick which

Choose HDFC Pixel Play if:

  • Your regular spend is in dining, groceries, travel, electronics or fashion
  • You want a 3% rate on Amazon, Flipkart or PayZapp
  • You are comfortable managing the card in the HDFC app
  • You do not need lounge access

Choose Axis ACE if:

  • You pay utility, DTH and mobile bills through Google Pay
  • You order from Swiggy, Zomato or Ola often
  • You want 4 domestic lounge visits a year
  • Your income is closer to ₹15,000 a month

Verdict

For most people with ordinary household spending, HDFC Pixel Play earns more because you pick the categories that match your spend, and the gap is about ₹3,900 a year at ₹50,000 a month. Its ₹500 category caps limit it for bigger purchases. Axis ACE is the better fit if bills through Google Pay make up a large share of your spend, or if the 4 lounge visits matter. Holding both works: Pixel Play for categories, ACE for bills.
