Amex Platinum Travel vs Axis Atlas: Which Earns Better Miles?

Amex Platinum Travel and Axis Atlas are both built for people who want their everyday spending to turn into airline miles, but they come from very different issuers with different tradeoffs around acceptance, fees, and transfer networks.

Reward earning

Platinum Travel earns Membership Rewards points at a strong flat rate on eligible spending, with periodic bonus categories. Axis Atlas uses its own Edge Miles program with tiered earning based on spending categories, generally rewarding travel-related spending at a higher rate than routine purchases. Both are designed primarily for point-to-mile transfers rather than cashback redemption, so read our rewards vs cashback piece if you're deciding whether a miles-first card even fits your habits.

Transfer partners

This is where the comparison gets interesting. Amex has one of the broadest airline and hotel transfer partner networks available to Indian cardholders, often with favorable transfer ratios. Atlas has built out its own competitive partner list as well, with strong ratios to several major airline programs. Neither is a clear universal winner — the right answer depends on which specific airline or hotel loyalty programs you actually use.

Acceptance

This is the deciding factor for many people. Amex's acceptance in India is meaningfully narrower than Visa or Mastercard, which affects Platinum Travel too — see our complete Amex guide for the full picture. Atlas, running on the Visa network, doesn't have this limitation and works virtually everywhere Atlas cardholders shop.

Fees and foreign transaction costs

Both cards carry premium annual fees, and both compete reasonably on foreign transaction markup, which matters if you're using either card while traveling abroad — our foreign transaction markup fees guide covers what a competitive markup rate looks like in the current market.

Which to pick

If broad acceptance across everyday Indian merchants matters as much as travel rewards, Atlas is the safer single-card choice. If you're comfortable carrying it as a second card alongside a Visa or Mastercard, Platinum Travel's rewards program and Amex's customer service reputation make it a strong complement rather than a replacement.

Verdict

Both cards earn miles well; the real choice is about acceptance and whether you're building a one-card or two-card wallet. Frequent flyers who travel internationally and don't mind carrying two cards get the most value pairing both.
