The best credit card for FASTag recharge is one that doesn't exclude toll top-ups, and very few cards say so clearly. In BestCard's data, the IDFC FIRST Power card is the one that names FASTag in its rewards, at up to 2.5% value back. Flat-rate cards like the Axis Ace are a reasonable fallback. Below are the shortlist, the maths and the exclusions to check before you set up auto-recharge.

How FASTag recharges are treated by card issuers

A FASTag is a prepaid wallet tied to your vehicle. When you top it up with a credit card, the issuer doesn't see a shopping transaction. Depending on the bank, it may be coded as a wallet load, a toll or government-style payment, or a bill payment if you pay through a bill-payment app. That coding decides how many points you earn, if any.

The three outcomes you'll usually see:

  1. Excluded. No points at all. Common with wallet-style loads.
  2. Reduced rate. Points at a fraction of the normal rate. The IDFC FIRST Select, for example, earns much less on FASTag than on dining or travel.
  3. Normal or bonus rate. Rarer, and the reason to pick your card carefully.

A FASTag recharge also isn't a fuel purchase, so your card's fuel surcharge waiver won't apply. Our explainer on cashback exclusions covers how merchant codes decide what you earn.

The shortlist

1. IDFC FIRST Power: the FASTag-specific pick

  • Joining and annual fee: ₹199 each, waived on ₹50,000 annual spend
  • Fuel/FASTag rate: up to 2.5% value back, capped at ₹1,000 a month
  • Base rate: 1%
  • Forex markup: 0%
  • Minimum income: ₹15,000 a month

This HPCL co-brand on RuPay lists FASTag recharges alongside fuel and LPG in its rewards, which is unusual. The fee is low and easy to waive. Because it's on RuPay you can also link it to UPI, but acceptance abroad is limited. For most drivers it's the cheapest way to earn something on tolls.

2. Axis Ace: flat 2% on general spends

  • Joining and annual fee: ₹499 each, waived on ₹2 lakh annual spend
  • Base rate: 2% on general spends
  • Bill payments via Google Pay: 5%, capped at ₹500 a month together with the online bonus
  • Minimum income: ₹15,000 a month

The Axis Ace pays 2% on spends outside its bonus categories. If Axis treats your FASTag top-up as a regular spend, that's one of the better flat rates around. If you recharge through Google Pay's bill-payment flow, it may count towards the 5% bill-pay bonus, but confirm this in Axis's current terms first. See our Axis Ace review for the full picture.

3. HDFC Tata Neu Infinity: 1.5% base, 5% on bills

  • Joining and annual fee: ₹1,499 each, waived on ₹3 lakh annual spend
  • Base rate: 1.5% as NeuCoins
  • Utilities: 5%
  • Forex markup: 2%
  • Minimum income: ₹1,00,000 a month

The Tata Neu Infinity HDFC card earns 1.5% back in NeuCoins, which redeem 1:1 in the Tata Neu app. It suits drivers who already shop on BigBasket, Croma or Tata 1mg and want one card for most of their spending. Check whether FASTag counts as a utility or a regular spend on this card before you rely on the 5% rate.

4. Flipkart Axis Bank: 1.5% on everything else

  • Joining fee: ₹0 in our data; annual fee ₹500, waived on ₹3.5 lakh
  • Base rate: 1.5% cashback
  • Lounge: 4 domestic visits a year
  • Minimum income: ₹15,000 a month

The Flipkart Axis card earns 1.5% outside its Flipkart and partner categories. If you already hold it for shopping, routing FASTag through it costs nothing extra, as long as Axis doesn't exclude the transaction.

5. IDFC FIRST Power+: for the rest of your driving costs

  • Joining and annual fee: ₹499 each, waived on ₹1.5 lakh
  • Fuel (HPCL): up to 6.5%
  • Groceries and utilities: 5%, each capped at ₹2,000 a month
  • Forex markup: 0%
  • Minimum income: ₹25,000 a month

IDFC FIRST Power+ isn't marketed for FASTag, but drivers spend far more on fuel than on tolls, and its 6.5% HPCL rate is strong. Pair it with a card that rewards FASTag and you've covered most of what a car costs to run.

Axis Ace ₹499 ₹2 lakh 2% base Check bill-pay treatment
HDFC Tata Neu Infinity ₹1,499 ₹3 lakh 1.5% base Utilities at 5%
Flipkart Axis ₹500 ₹3.5 lakh 1.5% base Good if already held

What tolls are actually worth

Say you drive between cities often and spend ₹3,000 a month on tolls, or ₹36,000 a year.

  • At 2.5%: ₹75 a month, ₹900 a year
  • At 2%: ₹60 a month, ₹720 a year
  • At 1.5%: ₹45 a month, ₹540 a year
  • On an excluded card: ₹0

The gap between the best and worst card is a few hundred rupees a year. Two things follow. First, don't get a card just for FASTag unless it's as cheap as the IDFC FIRST Power. Second, watch out for convenience fees: a 1% fee on a credit card top-up cancels most of the reward on a 1.5% card. If the platform charges one, recharging by UPI is cheaper.

How to choose

  1. Check your current card's exclusion list first. If FASTag earns the normal rate, you may not need anything new.
  2. Low toll spend (under ₹2,000 a month): Use whatever flat-rate card you already carry, as long as it isn't excluded.
  3. Heavy highway driver: The IDFC FIRST Power is cheap enough to hold just for tolls and HPCL fuel.
  4. Recharge from the right place. Recharging through your FASTag issuer's portal, a bill-payment app or a wallet can each be coded differently by your card issuer. Pick the route your card rewards.
  5. Set a sensible auto-recharge amount. Smaller, more frequent top-ups make it easier to see in your statement whether points were credited.

All figures come from BestCard's latest card data. Issuers update reward rules and exclusions often, so check the issuer's site before applying. To find the card that fits your full monthly spend, not just tolls, use the card matcher.

Frequently asked questions

Do credit cards give rewards on FASTag recharge?

Some do and many don't. Several issuers exclude FASTag top-ups or pay a lower rate on them, so check your card's exclusion list. Among the cards in BestCard's data, the IDFC FIRST Power card is one that names FASTag recharges in its rewards.

Does the fuel surcharge waiver apply to FASTag recharges?

No. The fuel surcharge waiver applies to transactions at fuel stations. A FASTag recharge is a toll prepayment, not a fuel purchase.

Is there a charge for recharging FASTag with a credit card?

Some FASTag issuers and recharge platforms add a convenience fee for credit card payments. If that fee is more than the reward you'd earn, use UPI or net banking instead.

Which card is best for FASTag if my toll spend is small?

If you spend only a few thousand rupees a month on tolls, choose a card for your bigger spending and just make sure it doesn't exclude FASTag. A flat-rate card such as the Axis Ace, which earns 2% on general spends, is a simple choice.
