Best Credit Cards for Petrol Pump Cashback: 2026 Update
30 July 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

We covered the mechanics of the fuel surcharge waiver and general fuel cards in earlier guides, but fuel card economics have shifted enough this year that a fresh look is warranted. UPI-at-the-pump has grown, some issuers have quietly tightened fuel MCC reward exclusions, and a couple of new cashback structures have entered the market. Here's what's actually different in 2026 and which cards are still worth carrying for fuel spending specifically.
What's changed since last year
The 1% fuel surcharge waiver itself hasn't gone anywhere — it's still standard on most mid-tier and above cards, capped per transaction and per month as before. What has changed is that several issuers have moved fuel purchases further down their reward-exclusion list on entry-level cards, treating "fuel" the same way they treat rent and wallet loads: capped at the surcharge waiver only, with zero reward points on top, even on cards that advertise broad cashback elsewhere. This wasn't universal a couple of years ago; check your specific card's current terms rather than relying on what you remember from when you first applied, since issuers do revise MCC exclusion lists without much fanfare.
The other shift is UPI-at-fuel-pump adoption. A large and growing share of fuel transactions now happen via UPI rather than card swipe, particularly at chain outlets that have pushed QR-code payment hard. This matters because UPI transactions don't carry the 1% surcharge in the first place, and they also don't earn credit card rewards — so if you've been defaulting to UPI at the pump out of habit, you may be leaving card-based cashback on the table on transactions where a card would have both waived the surcharge and earned a reward, if you'd used it instead.
Current best picks for fuel spending
For dedicated fuel-heavy spenders — daily commuters, delivery riders, anyone regularly filling up ₹2,000+ per visit — a card combining the surcharge waiver with an actual accelerated reward rate on fuel MCCs still beats a generic cashback card that treats fuel as excluded. SBI Card continues to offer this combination on select fuel-focused variants; confirm the current reward rate and monthly cap directly on the card's terms page since these get revised periodically and the number that was accurate a year ago may not be now.
Axis Bank credit cards are also worth checking for 2026 — Axis has run fuel-specific cashback promotions independent of the standard surcharge waiver on select cards, which is a genuine add rather than just the baseline benefit most cards now offer as table stakes.

Is a dedicated fuel card still worth it in 2026
The honest answer, same as our earlier fuel card guide concluded, hasn't fundamentally changed: for most people, fuel surcharge waiver is a "nice to have" feature on a card chosen for other reasons, not a standalone reason to apply for a new card. What has shifted is that with fuel MCC exclusions tightening on entry-level cards, it's worth actively re-checking whether your current everyday card still earns anything meaningful on fuel, rather than assuming it does because it did when you got it. If it's dropped to surcharge-waiver-only with zero rewards, and fuel is a real chunk of your monthly spend, that's now a stronger case for switching than it was before.
The exclusions to watch for in 2026
Fuel MCC 5541 (service stations) and 5542 (automated fuel dispensers) are treated slightly differently by some issuers — a handful of cards waive the surcharge at both but only extend reward points to one or the other. This is a genuinely easy detail to miss, and it's worth checking against your specific fuel station's payment terminal type if you're trying to optimize down to the last percentage point. Our cashback exclusions guide covers how MCC-level distinctions like this work across categories, not just fuel.
Where to go from here
If fuel is one of several categories you're trying to optimize together with groceries, dining, and online shopping, our combo card guide covers how to build a two-or-three-card lineup rather than hunting for one card that does everything. And if you're weighing whether the surcharge waiver alone justifies a card switch, revisit the fundamentals in our original fuel surcharge waiver explainer before deciding.
