Credit Card Purchase Protection and Insurance Cover Explained

Beyond rewards and lounge access, a surprising number of Indian credit cards bundle insurance-style benefits that most cardholders never activate or even know exist — purchase protection, travel insurance, and sometimes personal accident cover, all included at no extra cost.

What purchase protection usually covers

Purchase protection typically covers a new item bought on the card against theft or accidental damage for a limited period, usually 60-180 days from purchase, up to a capped amount per item and per year. Electronics and appliances are the most common qualifying categories. The catch is that most cardholders don't register a claim within the window because they don't know the benefit exists — it's rarely mentioned at the point of sale.

Travel insurance that comes bundled

Higher-tier travel cards often include complimentary travel insurance automatically when you book flight or hotel tickets on the card — covering things like trip cancellation, lost baggage, or medical emergencies abroad. This can be a genuine substitute for buying separate travel insurance on shorter international trips, though it's worth checking the coverage caps against a dedicated policy for longer or higher-risk trips.

Personal accident and air accident cover

Some premium cards include a personal accident cover or air accident cover as a background benefit, payable to nominees in case of an accident during travel booked on the card. This is genuinely valuable and completely free, but claiming it requires proof that the specific journey was booked using that card — worth keeping booking confirmations for exactly this reason.

Where to go from here

Check your card's terms document for a section usually titled "complimentary insurance" or "card benefits" to see what you're already covered for, and read our fraud protection tips alongside our international travel card guide for related protections.
