Can You Use Mastercard Credit Cards on UPI?
2 December 2025 · BestCard Editorial Team

If you've got a Mastercard credit card and you've tried to add it inside a UPI app, you've probably hit a wall — the option either doesn't show up or the linking fails partway through. This isn't a bug or a temporary glitch. Mastercard credit cards simply aren't part of India's UPI credit-card linkage program, and there's no workaround that changes that.
Why Mastercard doesn't work on UPI
UPI credit-card linkage is an NPCI-run program, and NPCI has only enabled it for RuPay-network cards so far. That's a deliberate choice, not an oversight — RuPay is NPCI's own domestic network, so opening credit-linked UPI to it first keeps switching and interchange within the NPCI ecosystem instead of routing through Visa or Mastercard's international rails. Visa credit cards face the exact same restriction as Mastercard for this reason; it has nothing to do with your bank, your credit limit, or your card tier. A Mastercard World Elite card and a basic Mastercard card are equally shut out.

What actually happens if you try to add it
Most UPI apps will let you select "Credit Card" as a payment method type, but the moment you pick your bank and it detects a Mastercard BIN, the flow either stops you or silently omits the option. Some apps don't even show Mastercard in the card-network dropdown for this feature. If your bank's app appears to let you proceed further than that, treat it as a UI inconsistency rather than confirmation that it'll actually work at checkout.
Your options if you want credit on UPI
The only real route is a RuPay credit card with UPI linkage enabled by your issuer — see our RuPay credit cards UPI guide for how the linking process works and which cards typically qualify. If you already hold a Mastercard card you like for its rewards or lounge benefits, you don't need to give it up — just keep it for regular swipes and online spending, and get a second RuPay card specifically for UPI QR payments if that's a big part of how you spend day to day. Our breakdown of RuPay vs Visa vs Mastercard covers how the three networks differ beyond just this one feature, including acceptance and forex handling.
Is this likely to change?
NPCI and the RBI have both signaled interest in expanding UPI credit linkage over time, and it's plausible Visa and Mastercard networks eventually get included. But there's no confirmed timeline, and rollouts like this tend to move slowly and bank-by-bank even after the network-level approval happens. Don't hold off on a UPI strategy waiting for your Mastercard to start working — plan around RuPay for now.
Where to go from here
If you're picking a new card and want UPI flexibility built in from day one, start with choosing your first credit card and prioritize RuPay variants with UPI support. And if you're weighing rewards specifically on UPI spending, which credit cards give rewards on UPI breaks down which RuPay cards are actually worth linking.
