OneCard Metal Review: A Lifetime Free Metal Card Worth Having?
13 October 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

OneCard Metal is a lifetime free credit card with a genuine metal body, a 1.5% base reward rate, accelerated rewards on your top spending categories and a lower-than-usual 1.5% forex markup. For anyone who qualifies at ₹50,000 a month of income, it's one of the better no-fee cards in India. Its weak spots are thin lounge access and a reward catalogue narrower than the big banks'.
Who this card is for
OneCard Metal suits salaried professionals who want a single no-fee card that does a bit of everything: decent online and dining rewards, sensible forex charges for occasional trips abroad, and a slick app to control it. It's also the natural upgrade for existing OneCard users whose income has grown.
It's not for frequent flyers who need lounge access, or for people chasing airline transfer partners. There are better cards for that, though they cost money.

How the rewards work
OneCard's reward engine automatically detects your top spending categories each billing cycle and gives them a 5X boost. You don't have to register categories or activate offers. On the Metal variant, the underlying base rate is 1.5%, higher than the base OneCard's 1%.
In BestCard's data, that translates to roughly 5% on online shopping and dining when they're boosted, 3% on travel and 1.5% on everything else. Because the 5X is tied to your top categories in a cycle, not every category gets it every month. Treat the 5% as what you earn on your largest spending areas, not as a guarantee across the board.
Worked example: ₹40,000 a month
Suppose your monthly spends are:
- Online shopping: ₹12,000 × 5% = ₹600
- Dining and food delivery: ₹5,000 × 5% = ₹250
- Travel bookings: ₹5,000 × 3% = ₹150
- Everything else: ₹18,000 × 1.5% = ₹270
- Total: ₹1,270 a month, about ₹15,240 a year
With no fee to recover, all of that is net. Even if only online shopping got the 5X boost and dining fell to the base rate, you'd still earn about ₹1,095 a month.
Forex savings
On a ₹1,00,000 overseas trip, a standard 3.5% markup costs ₹3,500. OneCard Metal's 1.5% costs ₹1,500, saving you ₹2,000 before GST. It's not zero, but it's a meaningful improvement for a free card. Our low forex markup cards guide lists the 0% options.

Lounge, fuel and app features
Lounge: Limited complimentary domestic lounge access, unlocked only if you meet a quarterly spend threshold. There's no fixed annual allowance and no international lounge. If lounges matter to you, see our lifetime free lounge cards list.
Fuel: 1% surcharge waiver capped at ₹400 per calendar month.
Card and app: The card is stainless steel with no number printed on it. Card details, limits, international usage and rewards all live in the OneCard app. You can freeze the card, toggle online or contactless payments, and set limits instantly. For people who like control, it's one of the best card apps in India.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lifetime free, with no spend target to keep it that way
- 1.5% base rate is higher than most free cards
- Automatic 5X on your top categories, no activation needed
- 1.5% forex markup, low for a no-fee card
- Genuine metal card with a numberless, app-controlled design
Cons
- ₹50,000 monthly income requirement
- Lounge access is limited and spend-gated, with no international visits
- Reward redemption options are narrower than HDFC, Axis or Amex programmes
- 5X only applies to your top categories each cycle
Eligibility
BestCard's data lists a minimum monthly income of ₹50,000, higher than the base OneCard. You apply through the OneCard app with KYC done digitally. A good CIBIL score is important, as with any unsecured card.
If you already hold the base OneCard, check the app for an upgrade offer before applying fresh. An upgrade usually keeps your account history intact, which is better for your credit age than opening a new account and closing the old one. If your income is just below the threshold, the base OneCard is still a strong free card, and you can move up later.
How it compares
OneCard (Federal Bank): The base card is also lifetime free with the same 5X engine, but a 1% base rate and 2% forex markup. If your income is below the Metal threshold, it's a strong substitute.
ICICI Amazon Pay: Lifetime free, 5% on Amazon with Prime (3% without), 1% elsewhere and a 1.99% forex markup. Better if Amazon is where most of your shopping happens. See our Amazon Pay ICICI review.
IDFC FIRST Select: Lifetime free with 0% forex markup, 4% on dining and travel, and one domestic lounge visit a quarter, but it needs ₹1,00,000 monthly income. Better for frequent international spenders who qualify. Read the IDFC FIRST Select deep dive.
Verdict
OneCard Metal is one of the best value no-fee cards for someone earning ₹50,000 a month or more. The 1.5% base rate, automatic 5X categories and 1.5% forex markup cover most everyday needs without costing anything. Get it as your all-purpose free card, and add a paid travel card later if lounge access starts to matter. Our metal credit cards guide shows how it stacks up against pricier metal options.
