SBI Card Miles Review: An Entry Travel Card With a Big Catch

SBI Card Miles is SBI's entry-level travel card: ₹1,499 a year, Travel Credits that convert up to 1:1 into more than 20 airline and hotel programmes, and milestone bonuses from ₹5 lakh of annual spend. The catch is a low base earn rate and no lounge access at all, so it only pays off for people who spend heavily and want flexible transfer partners without a premium fee.

Who this card is for

SBI Card Miles fits a specific profile: someone who spends ₹40,000 to ₹1 lakh a month, wants to collect airline or hotel points without committing to one programme, and doesn't care about lounge access. It also works as a stepping stone if you're testing whether miles suit you before moving to a premium card.

If you want lounge visits, a low forex markup or good returns on modest spending, look at the alternatives at the end of this review.

How the rewards work

You earn Travel Credits on every eligible spend: about 0.5% in value on general spends and 1% on travel. Travel Credits convert up to 1:1 into partner airline miles or hotel points. They can't be redeemed for cash or statement credit, so their value depends entirely on how well you use the partner programmes.

The milestone structure is where the real value sits. Cross ₹5 lakh of annual spend and you get 5,000 bonus Travel Credits, with bigger bonuses (up to 20,000) at higher tiers between ₹5 lakh and ₹12 lakh. Check SBI's current tier table for the exact thresholds.

Worked example: ₹50,000 a month

  • Travel spends: ₹10,000 × 1% = ₹100
  • Other spends: ₹40,000 × 0.5% = ₹200
  • Monthly value: ₹300, or ₹3,600 a year
  • Annual spend: ₹6,00,000, which crosses the ₹5 lakh milestone (5,000 Travel Credits, about ₹5,000) and the ₹6 lakh fee waiver

Total yearly value: about ₹8,600 in Travel Credits, with no renewal fee. That's a respectable return, roughly 1.4% on total spend.

Worked example: ₹25,000 a month

  • Travel spends: ₹5,000 × 1% = ₹50
  • Other spends: ₹20,000 × 0.5% = ₹100
  • Monthly value: ₹150, or ₹1,800 a year
  • Annual spend: ₹3,00,000, below both the milestone and the waiver

You pay ₹1,499 plus GST, about ₹1,769, to earn about ₹1,800. That's breaking even at best. At this spend level, a lifetime free cashback card would serve you better.

Travel benefits and what's missing

The main travel benefit is flexibility: one currency that moves into more than 20 partner programmes, so you can pick the airline or hotel that has the best award availability for your trip. If you're new to transfers, our guide on moving card points to airline miles explains how to get good value.

What's missing matters just as much:

  • No lounge access. Unlike the Miles ELITE and PRIME variants, the base card has none.
  • 3.5% forex markup. For a travel card, that's a real weakness. Spending ₹1 lakh abroad costs ₹3,500 in markup before GST.
  • No cash value. If you stop travelling, your Travel Credits lose most of their usefulness.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Transfers up to 1:1 to 20+ airline and hotel programmes
  • Milestone bonuses that scale with higher spend
  • Moderate ₹1,499 fee for a transfer-partner card
  • Accessible ₹25,000 monthly income requirement

Cons

  • Low 0.5% base rate on non-travel spends
  • No lounge access on this variant
  • 3.5% forex markup on a travel card
  • ₹6 lakh fee waiver is high for an entry card
  • Travel Credits have no cash redemption value

Eligibility

BestCard's data lists a minimum monthly income of ₹25,000, one of the lower thresholds for a transfer-partner card. A good credit score and stable income history will help. If you're an existing SBI Card holder, check the app for an upgrade offer.

How it compares

SBI Card Miles ELITE: ₹4,999 a year (waived at ₹15 lakh), with a 1% base rate, 3% on travel, a 1.99% forex markup, and 8 domestic plus 6 international lounge visits a year. For frequent flyers, the step up is usually worth it. Read our Miles ELITE review.

SBI Card Miles PRIME: The middle option at ₹2,999 (waived at ₹10 lakh), with a 1% base rate, 2% on travel and a 2.5% forex markup. See our Miles PRIME review.

Axis Atlas: ₹5,000 a year with a 2% base rate and 5% on travel in BestCard's data, plus its own airline and hotel transfer partners. It costs more, but earns much faster. Apply for Axis Atlas or see how it stacks up in SBI Miles ELITE vs Axis Atlas.

Verdict

SBI Card Miles is a reasonable entry into transferable travel rewards if you spend ₹5 lakh or more a year and want partner flexibility without a premium fee. At that level, the milestone bonus and fee waiver make it a decent card. Below ₹4 lakh a year, the low base rate and missing lounge access make it hard to justify, and the Miles ELITE or a free card will do more for you.
