The best credit card for Dhanteras depends on what you're buying. For jewellery at Tanishq, CaratLane, Mia or Zoya, the Titan SBI card and the Tata Neu Infinity cards offer up to 5% back. For utensils, appliances and electronics bought online, Flipkart Axis and Amazon Pay ICICI pay 5% on their platforms. For a local jeweller, a strong flat-rate card like Axis ACE is the safe default, as long as jewellery isn't excluded.

Dhanteras purchases are often the biggest single card spends of the year. On a ₹1.5 lakh jewellery bill, the difference between a 1% card and a 5% card is ₹6,000.

Quick comparison

Card Fee (joining / annual) Fee waived at Dhanteras strength Min. monthly income
Titan SBI ₹2,999 / ₹2,999 ₹3 lakh Up to 5% at Tanishq, CaratLane, Mia, Zoya ₹35,000
Tata Neu Infinity HDFC ₹1,499 / ₹1,499 ₹3 lakh 5% NeuCoins on Tata brands, 1.5% elsewhere ₹1 lakh
Tata Neu Infinity SBI ₹1,499 / ₹1,499 ₹3 lakh 5% NeuCoins on Tata brands, 1.5% elsewhere ₹50,000
Flipkart Axis Nil / ₹500 ₹3.5 lakh 5% on Flipkart and Myntra ₹15,000
Amazon Pay ICICI Lifetime free n/a 5% on Amazon with Prime ₹30,000
Axis ACE ₹499 / ₹499 ₹2 lakh 2% flat on most spends ₹15,000

For branded jewellery

Titan SBI Card

The Titan SBI card exists for this kind of purchase. It offers up to 5% value back at Tanishq, CaratLane, Mia and Zoya, Titan's own jewellery and watch brands. You get 12,000 bonus points (about ₹3,000) when you pay the joining fee, which covers the ₹2,999 fee. You also get 8 domestic and 4 international lounge visits a year.

Outside these brands the card is weak: the base rate is 0.5% and the forex markup is 3.5%. It's for people who shop at Titan brands regularly, not an everyday card. Read more in our Titan SBI review.

Tata Neu Infinity (HDFC or SBI)

Both Tata Neu Infinity cards earn 5% NeuCoins on eligible Tata Neu and Tata brand spends, and the Tata ecosystem includes Titan and Tanishq. They earn 1.5% on everything else, which is useful if Dhanteras also means a new TV from Croma or groceries from BigBasket. NeuCoins are worth ₹1 each inside Tata Neu.

  • The Tata Neu Infinity HDFC card adds 5% on utility bills and a lower 2% forex markup, but needs ₹1 lakh a month in income.
  • The Tata Neu Infinity SBI card asks for ₹50,000 a month and credits 1,499 NeuCoins when you join.

Which brands and purchases earn the full 5% is set in the Tata Neu app and can change, so check before a large jewellery buy. Our Tata Neu Infinity HDFC vs SBI comparison covers the differences.

For utensils, appliances and electronics

Dhanteras is also a traditional day to buy steel and silver utensils, kitchen appliances and electronics.

  • Flipkart Axis pays 5% on Flipkart and Myntra and 1.5% elsewhere, with 4 domestic lounge visits a year.
  • Amazon Pay ICICI pays 5% on Amazon with Prime (3% without) and is lifetime free.
  • For Croma purchases, the Tata Neu Infinity cards above apply.

Festive sales often stack instant bank discounts on top of card rewards. A ₹40,000 TV with a 10% bank offer plus 5% card cashback can work out cheaper than a bigger headline discount paid on a card without the offer.

For your local jeweller

Plenty of families buy from a trusted neighbourhood jeweller instead of a big brand. There, no card gets a special rate, so you want the best flat rate:

  • Axis ACE pays 2% on most spends, and the ₹499 fee is waived at ₹2 lakh.
  • Tata Neu Infinity cards pay 1.5% outside Tata brands.

Check exclusions first. Some issuers exclude jewellery or bullion from rewards, or cap points on them. Also ask the jeweller whether they add a card surcharge, since some small shops do. A 1% to 2% surcharge cancels most of your rewards, and then UPI or a bank transfer may be cheaper.

Worked example: a ₹2 lakh Dhanteras

Say you spend ₹1.5 lakh on a Tanishq necklace and ₹50,000 on a TV and kitchen appliances on Flipkart.

Option A: Titan SBI for the necklace, Flipkart Axis for the electronics

  • Necklace: ₹1,50,000 × 5% = up to ₹7,500
  • Electronics: ₹50,000 × 5% = ₹2,500
  • Total: up to ₹10,000

Option B: one flat 1% card for everything

  • ₹2,00,000 × 1% = ₹2,000

Option C: Tata Neu Infinity for both (the necklace at 5%, Flipkart at the 1.5% base)

  • ₹7,500 + ₹750 = ₹8,250

Pairing the right card with each purchase is worth about ₹8,000 here. Before you count on the full 5%, check the caps and terms for each brand.

Gold coins, EMIs and other cautions

  • Gold coins and bars: reward rules for bullion vary a lot by card. Many people buy coins through apps or banks. Read the terms first.
  • EMIs: a big jewellery bill tempts many people to convert it to EMI. "No cost" EMIs can carry processing fees and GST on the interest. Our guide to no-cost EMI traps explains what to watch for.
  • Credit limit: a ₹1.5 lakh purchase can take up most of your limit and push your utilisation up for that month. Pay early if you can.
  • PAN: jewellers usually ask for PAN on high-value purchases.

Before you apply

Rates, fees and income criteria above reflect BestCard's latest card data, and festive offers change quickly, so confirm current terms on the issuer's site before you shop. Apply a few weeks before Dhanteras so the card arrives in time. If you're not sure which card fits, the card matcher can shortlist options for you.

Frequently asked questions

Which credit card is best for buying jewellery on Dhanteras?

For Tanishq, CaratLane, Mia and Zoya, the Titan SBI card offers up to 5% value back, and both Tata Neu Infinity cards earn up to 5% NeuCoins on eligible Tata brand spends. Check the current brand terms before a big purchase.

Do credit cards give reward points on gold coins and jewellery?

It depends on the card. Some issuers exclude or cap rewards on jewellery and bullion, so read the exclusion list or ask the bank before you buy.

Should I convert a Dhanteras jewellery purchase to EMI?

Only if you understand the full cost. Even 'no cost' EMIs can carry processing fees and GST, and some offers cancel the cash discount you'd otherwise get.

Do I need PAN to buy jewellery on a credit card?

Jewellers usually ask for PAN on high-value purchases, as tax rules require it above certain amounts. Keep it handy for big Dhanteras buys.
