HDFC PhonePe Uno credit card

The HDFC PhonePe Uno Credit Card is the entry-level co-brand card from HDFC and PhonePe, and it lives almost entirely inside the PhonePe app. You apply there, manage it there, and earn most of your cashback there: 2% on bill payments, recharges and travel bookings made through PhonePe, and 1% on other online brands and UPI Scan & Pay transactions. It's a RuPay card for people who already pay their electricity bill, recharge and the local chaiwala through PhonePe.

Fees and eligibility at a glance

Uno charges a ₹499 joining fee and a ₹499 annual fee, waived once you spend ₹1 lakh in a year. That's about ₹8,300 a month, and since UPI payments count as card spend once you link it, many regular PhonePe users will clear it without changing anything. The listed eligibility covers salaried and self-employed applicants aged 21 to 65. The one firm rule is the channel: you can only apply through the PhonePe app, not through HDFC's own website or branches.

The welcome offer is 5 scratch cards worth ₹100 each, unlocked on your first 5 UPI-on-credit-card transactions through PhonePe. That's up to ₹500, which effectively refunds the joining fee, and it nudges you to set up UPI payments on the card from day one.

Rewards and how they actually work

The structure has two tiers. Utility bill payments, recharges and travel bookings made through the PhonePe app earn 2% cashback. Other online brands and UPI Scan & Pay transactions earn 1%, as does general spend. Cashback arrives as CashPoints, which redeem 1:1 against your statement balance at no charge, so there's no catalogue to browse and no conversion table to decode.

Here's a realistic month. ₹4,000 of electricity, broadband and mobile bills paid through PhonePe earns ₹80. Another ₹10,000 of UPI Scan & Pay at shops and restaurants earns ₹100. That's ₹180 a month, or about ₹2,160 a year, on ₹14,000 of monthly spend, which also clears the fee waiver comfortably.

The 1% on UPI Scan & Pay is the quietly useful part. Most people pay small merchants by scanning a QR code from a savings account, which earns nothing. Linking a RuPay credit card turns those same payments into cashback, and as long as you pay the bill in full each month, it costs you nothing extra.

Fuel, cash and the small print

There's a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions between ₹400 and ₹1,00,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle. Cash withdrawals cost 2.5% or ₹500, whichever is higher, with interest from the day of withdrawal and no interest-free period. There's no lounge access and no travel insurance at this tier.

How it compares with PhonePe Ultimo and PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE

The step-up within the same family is HDFC PhonePe Ultimo. It costs ₹999 a year, waived at ₹2 lakh of spend, with a welcome benefit equal to the joining fee. It earns up to 2,000 reward points a month across utilities, bill payments, flights, hotels, online shopping and UPI Scan & Pay, and adds 8 domestic lounge visits a year (2 per quarter), but only in quarters where you spend ₹75,000. That's ₹25,000 a month, three times what Uno needs for its fee waiver. If you don't spend at that level, the lounge access never unlocks and Uno is the better deal.

The other rival is the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE. It costs the same ₹499 with the same ₹1 lakh waiver, refunds the joining fee as a PhonePe e-gift voucher after your first transaction, and adds a ₹3,000 travel voucher once you cross ₹3 lakh of annual spend. It advertises accelerated rewards on PhonePe app spends and online shopping, but they come as reward points, and SBI charges ₹99 plus taxes per redemption request. It also asks for a 700 credit score and ₹15,000 monthly income. PURPLE pulls ahead only if you spend ₹3 lakh a year and value the travel voucher.

What's genuinely good about this card

Cashback that redeems 1:1 against your statement, with no fee and no catalogue, is the right way to run an entry card. Earning 1% on UPI Scan & Pay turns small everyday payments into rewards. The ₹500 scratch-card welcome offer covers the first year's fee, and the ₹1 lakh waiver threshold is easy for anyone who uses PhonePe daily.

Where it falls short

The rates are low. 2% on bills and 1% on everything else is fine for a ₹499 card but won't compete with a dedicated cashback card on online shopping. The 2% only applies to bills, recharges and travel booked inside PhonePe, so paying your electricity bill through another app or the utility's own site earns just the base rate. The PhonePe-only application route won't suit everyone, and there's no lounge access, insurance or travel perks of any kind.

Who this card actually makes sense for

Uno suits heavy PhonePe users who pay most of their bills and recharges in the app and do a lot of UPI Scan & Pay at local shops. If most of your spending happens on Amazon, Flipkart or food delivery apps, a cashback card built for those platforms will earn noticeably more.
